Decluttering Your New Home for the New Year

Feb 04 2020
As we kick off the new year (and new decade!), people are starting to put their New Year’s resolutions to practice, hoping for a fresh start. Creating a plan for success very much starts with a clean state of mind – and a clean home too! Here is a quick guide for tackling the cluttered areas of your home which will have you feeling more relaxed, comfortable and focused at home.

A Warm Welcome - Simple Entryways

Your home's entryway is the first thing that guests will admire when they step inside your house and it’s also the sight that welcomes you home every day. So, where do we start? Wipe off all counters of any debris that is leftover and mop the floor of any muddy prints left from those little rascals. If you’re following along to this guide during the winter and spring seasons, be sure to invest in a door mat to keep the dirt and mud at the door.

Add some style and organization with storage baskets for stowing away shoes and other items if needed. No coat closet? No problem! Consider a coat rack or some shelving to hold smaller on-the-go pieces. Finally, give your walls some love and add a mirror or art piece that you adore which will give this small space some big personality.

It happens to the best of us – whether you’re living alone, a pair of lovebirds or a party of five – there comes a point in time where you’ll experience an overstuffed pantry or a drawer overflowing with random junk. Don’t worry, we’re here to guide you through it all.

Let’s start with the pantry. Pull out every trace of food you can dig up and begin by checking the expiration date and disposing of everything that’s no longer edible into the trash. If you find any items that haven’t expired and you know you that you won’t use them, be sure to donate them to services such as Edmonton’s Food Bank or your local food bank drop off. Don’t forget to wipe down the pantry shelves before restocking your items. You can apply the same method for your other drawers and cabinets that need purging!

Just like we did in the pantry, pull everything out of your closet – whether it’s the hall closet, entryway closet or your bedroom closet – and organize things that haven’t been used in a while. This could be towels, unused toys & board games, old clothing, etc. Purge and donate everything you don’t use.

A Livable Living Room

Our living rooms are undoubtedly the most used space in our homes. They’re the go-to place to kick back, relax and unwind after a long day. But how do you enjoy a slice of life when your living room is a cluttered mess and instills a sense of chaos?

If you have young children, it’s highly likely that their toys manage to share the living space as much as the family does. If your living room is feeling cramped, identify areas where there is an abundant amount of clutter and take note of where other organization issues show up in the living room. Use baskets to organize loose items such as controllers and remotes so they are still easily accessible.

Do you still have ancient devices lying around *cough* DVD players? Unless you still use your old electronics for whatever reason, we recommend recycling them at an Eco Station. Almost everything, from music to movies and television shows, is available to stream from Smart devices – Smart televisions, smart home speakers and smart hubs.
